I seldomly post about airport timetables here, but I recently came accross this Departed Flights page about the Madrid 1996 schedules and I really enjoyed this journey back in time.

Back in 1996, ✈Pauknair (trading name for Panair) was flying to Melilla, ✈Líneas Aéreas Navarras (Air Truck) to Pamplona, Swiftair to Badajoz,  Air Inter to Paris with  its Fokker 100, and among other recurring visitors was Virgin Express or JAT to Belgrade. Air Nostrum was still an independient carrier and not Iberia Regional, and Air Europa and Spanair were, of course, trying to harm Iberia as much as possible.

Today,  I am posting this 2003 Madrid-Barajas airport schedule. There were a lot of changes between 1996 and 2003, and 10 years later, in 2013, there have been even more changes.

This Aena booklet has many mistakes, but it is still well worth a look. There is a good thing about it: it lists every flight that was at the Aena database, including charters and special flights. The drawback is that there is no way of telling (unless you already knew, that is, lol) wheter one particular flight is a scheduled one or not.

A fair number of Spanish carriers shown here have ceased operations since then (Hola, Futura, Air Plus Comet, Iberworld, Lagunair...) Domestic air traffic was certainly larger at the time, but there were fewer regional airlines. Other than Iberia Regional / Air Nostrum, there was a Lagunair flight to León and another one to Girona (by Intermed, I guess, even if it is listed as a SF3)

You will find a link to a PDF file with the whole schedules at the end of this post.

This was of course before teh T4 was built, so all airlines were sharing the old terminal building, split into three concourses: T1 (international flights outside Schengen area), T2 (Schengen) and T3 (Iberia Puente Aéreo and regional flights)

A rather inaccurate destination map. Most domestic destinations are missing, there are other cities listed in the timetable section that are not shown on the map, some other cities (such as Oporto) are misplaced, and finally some of them are even misspelled !

It was possible to check-in for some airlines at the Nuevos Ministerios station, leave your baggage there and reach the airport by train. This was a superb service which was discontinued after the T4 was built and the Madrid underground line to the airport was open.

Some airline promos inside this booklet to end with.

✈Euroguineana flights to Malabo, operated by Spanair

A former Qualiflyer member, ✈Air Littoral lasted for some years after the group collapsed. In 2003 they were in a partnership agreement with Spanair.

This "Technological park" is a bit of off-topic here, but I found slightly amusing since they were using this Cathay Pacific A330...
